Goshen Scout Reservation Camp Bowman - Summer 2018!

Boy Scout Summer Camp is a great opportunity for fun and merit badges. As you may know, Troop 255 rotates summer camps to keep the experience fresh. We’ll be going to Goshen Scout Reservation Camp Bowman ( Virginia on June 23-30, 2018. Camp Bowman offers camping for 400 and includes a chapel, handicraft area, extensive archery, rifle and shotgun areas, parade field, aquatics, shower house, and direct access to hiking trails. Camp Bowman is Goshen Scout Reservation’s Patrol Cooking Camp and can help Boy Scouts apply their skills whether they are brand new or in their late teens. There are lots of lessons (teamwork, cooking, cleaning, etc.) to be learned through Patrol Cooking that cannot be learned in a dining hall.

Please register online as soon as possible, with a deposit of $100.  Payment in full, after mulch credits are calculated, by check (payable to BSA Troop 255)  is required by the appropriate deadline – please provide your payment to Todd Rosentover or Steve Surko.  The cost is a slight decrease over last summer, but does not include a Troop 255 T-shirt:

        •  Early Discount Price ($40 off) Price per Camper Youth: $405  if paid by…April 10

        •  Regular Price Price per Camper Youth: $450  if paid by…May 15

        •  Late Registration Price ($40 more) Price per Camper Youth: $490

These costs are based on a conservative estimate of 24 Scouts. But if fewer than 24 Scouts register there may be a small surcharge. (NOTE: There is an additional charge of $50 for ATV and $40 for Shotgun Shooting Merit badge.)

Troop 255 is looking for adult volunteers to join some experienced hands  at Goshen Scout Reservation Camp Bowman.  Adult volunteers can split a week if that works best. There is no charge for adult volunteers.

All Scouts and Leaders must have their BSA Annual Health & Medical Record w NCAC Advisory (see link below) with updated doctor’s signature before going to camp. The Troop 255 Summer Camp Leader will collect all forms prior to departure, but they are not required for registration.

Contact Assistant Scoutmaster Steve Surko at if you have any questions.

For Scouts 14 and up ---> Bowman Veterans (Vets)  Program:

The Bowman Vets program allows scouts who have been coming to camp for several years and are older scouts (14 and up) to participate in more challenging, exciting activities throughout the week.  Early in the week the scouts will plan their activities with the Vets Director in coordination with other Camp Directors on the lake to allow for opportunities at Camp Baird's High Adventure Camp, Lenhok'sin (such as caving, paddle boarding, powder rifle, mountain biking, etc.) as well as other programs offered at base camps around the lake.  Some of these activities may include: wakeboarding, action archery, rock climbing, C.O.P.E., kayaking around the lake, ATV, challenging hikes, and overnight treks.  Those in the Vets program can begin and earn partials in the Geocaching merit badge.  Scouts need to be at least 14 years of age to participate in the program.

This is a regular merit badge camp at Goshen reservation/Camp Bowman.

For anyone thinking Eagle, or Scouts just looking for a good time, this is highly recommended. More information will be forthcoming.

    • Philmont Scout Ranch, northeast New Mexico

We hope you had a great summer that included hiking, camping, swimming, and relaxing.  We also hope that you are well prepared for a new school year and a new Scouting year.

Troop 255 has two High Adventure trek slots reserved at the Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico from 9-21 July 2018 and we need to make the next installment payment to Philmont Scout Ranch on 1 October 2017 to pay for the two treks.  In total, each participant needs to pay Philmont $940 to cover the cost of the trek.  Scouts that signed up last January made a $100 deposit to the Troop to cover for the Troop’s down payment.

Please bring the next required payment of $420 to Todd Rosentover or an Adult Leader this coming Tuesday, 12 September but no later than 19 September.

Looking forward to the Spring, the final installment payment to Philmont of $420 is due on 1 March 2018.

Philmont Scout Ranch is the Boy Scouts of America's largest national High Adventure Base. To those that are fortunate to visit Philmont, the trek represents one of the pinnacle achievements of Scouting.  Please visit the following website to learn more about Philmont and what it offers:

There may be a few slots available on what is currently an all Troop crew (Crew 1) and a combined Venturer/Scout crew (Crew 2).  If you have not signed up to go to Philmont and you are interested in going, please contact an adult leader for further information.

Adult leaders met a few weeks ago to start preparing for next summer.  We discussed logistics associated with the trip and plan to share that information with you over the next several months.  We would like to invite you to an initial organizing meeting at 6:30PM, before the Troop meeting, Tuesday, 26 September.  We will discuss what we know at this point and what to expect as we move towards Philmont next summer.

Currently, we anticipate arriving in the New Mexico area two days before the trek next summer to help acclimatize to the elevation and climate and we anticipate departing from New Mexico on either 21 or 22 July.  We need to get some information from Scouts and their families to finalize the exact start and end dates for the trip and begin, in earnest, planning the trip.

In addition to the Philmont trek fee, you should anticipate on travel and transportation costs to and from Cimarron, New Mexico and other incidental costs such as meals before and after the trek, and souvenirs.  We currently anticipate that the total costs for each participant, including Philmont fee, air and ground transportation costs, meals and lodging, souvenirs, etc., will run somewhere in the range of $1700-$2000.  We will provide additional information regarding expected costs and other information at the initial meeting on 26 September and over the next several months.

    Yours in Scouting,

    Bruce Kiracofe

    • Appalachian Trail, Shenandoah National Park

As we did last year, Troop 255 will be doing a multi-day hike on the Appalachian Trail this summer.  A number of you have expressed interest in the trip, and we have room for more!

The Appalachian Trail is a ~2,160 mile long footpath that runs from Maine to Georgia - including sections close to us in Maryland and Pennsylvania.  Our trip will likely take us on a portion that's about 60 miles long - tentatively from Thornton Gap in Virginia and southwards (all in Virginia).  This is a great section that has beautiful scenery and some nice overlooks.  For those who don't have it, this trip should allow you to make substantial progress towards the Hiking Merit Badge.  This also will qualify as a troop HIgh Adventure.

Here are the working dates for the trip, as well as some additional details:
-- Trip dates:  Wednesday, August 1st - Sunday, August 5th (or possibly one week later)
-- Location:  Appalachian Trail, Shenandoah National Park
-- Daily mileage:  10-12 miles on average, with some daily variation (that is, more or less than 10-12 miles)
    -- Age limits:  none!
-- Preparation: mandatory pre-hikes and prep sessions beforehand

For those who are interested, let's plan on talking about this trip at this week's or next week's meeting - esp. focusing on gear and getting physically ready.  This includes parents:  any who want to join are welcome on this trip too.

Let me know if you are interested, and see you soon-

    Paul Barringer
