Cost: Free, but please register so we have enough materials for everyone.
Rain date is Sat., Feb. 6.

Location: Rock Creek Park Nature Center and Planetarium. 5200 Glover Rd NW, Washington, DC 20015. Bathrooms may not be available. 

Important! Complete the COVID screening form no more than one day prior to the event.

The Troop will work on the following requirements toward the Orienteering merit badge.

  • Requirement 5 – 100m pace course
  • Requirement 7 – Orienteering event
  • Requirement 8 – Set up 2000m course
  • Requirement 9 – Act as an official
  • Requirement 10 – Teach orienteering skills

Bring:

  • Mask. (properly worn)
  • Appropriate dress for the weather. (cold, possibly muddy)
  • Water. (1 liter or more)
  • Snacks/lunch.
  • Any needed medication.
  • Sun protection.
  • Pen and paper.
  • Watch or another timekeeping device.
  • Orienteering compass, if you have one.

The Troop will provide:

  • Topographic/magnetic north maps of the area.
  • Control description sheet templates.
  • Materials to make control points.
  • Extra orienteering compasses.
  • 100-meter pace course.
  • First aid kits.

Agenda:

  1. Assemble and review plans for the day.
  2. Record 100m paces for walking and running.
  3. Divide group into two teams.
  4. Each team sets up a 2000+ meter, five control course and creates a map/control description sheet.
  5. Teams take turns running the other course or officiating at their own course by recording start and finish times.
  6. Review and discuss results.
  7. Tear down courses and collect supplies.
  8. Depart.
