Sorry, this trip has been cancelled due to a forecast of poor observation weather.
Overview: On Saturday evening, weather permitting, we will observe at Hopewell Observatory, a small private observatory on Bull Mountain Mountain near Haymarket, VA. We will camp on the Observatory grounds. They have two 14-inch, a 30-cm, and a 10-inch telescope. Feel free to bring your own telescope or binoculars if you have one. We will finish several requirements for the Astronomy Merit Badge including a 3 hour (9 PM – Midnight) observing session. Assemble: 4:00 PM Saturday at Chevy Chase Elementary School. Return: 11 AM on Sunday to CCES.
Food: There are NO camp stoves or fires allowed, but there is a way to boil water– prepare your meal plan accordingly, and bring an electric kettle if you have one. Bring food for Saturday dinner and Sunday breakfast.
Tenting: We will be guests of the Observatory. Practice Leaving No Trace! Space is limited, so plan to share and keep tents to a minimum. A short walk (200 m) is required from the cars to the Observatory grounds.
Cost: None, but be prepared to offer your driver $5 for gas.
